Solar-powered cellphone

Chinese telecom supplier Hi-Tech Wealth adds a solar panel on top of one of its clamshell-designed phones. One hour of sunlight can provide enough power for 40 minutes of talk-time. The phone can also be recharged by light from other sources including candles.

The S116 sells in China for about $510 and features a 1.3 mpx camera, an MP3 player and a microSD memory card slot. According to Xinhua News, Hi-Tech Wealth plans to put six solar-powered phones on the market this year and another 30 in 2008.

TrimTrac Locator

The TrimTrac Locator - You can put this tracking device into your car, your suitcase or anything else you want to track, to check its location via a password-protected website.

The TrimTrac Locator works indoors and outdoors; enhanced GPS enables it to often work in places where traditional GPS may not work. It can be powered by AA batteries or by an external power source - optional Vehicle Adapter enables it to tap into 12 Volt (DC) vehicle power. The device contains no wires and no external antennas. Sophisticated log query capabilities enable intelligent on-demand position polling based on a variety of options including most recent position, logged but unsent messages, selected position or status messages, or by messages selected by time ranges.

The TrimTrac Locator also contains GSM technology enabling it to call in its position. It can send a SMS to any valid telephone number, including other cell phones. Advanced motion filtering algorithms enable motion-based reporting by pre-defined criteria. Frequency alterable per application or end-user needs as often as every 2-3 minutes, e.g., during suspected theft of the tracked object. Optimizes battery life of device by aggregating message summary information into reduced number of SMS messages.
